Chemical compliance in plain language
RSL, MRSL, ZDHC and the paperwork behind them — explained the way a production floor actually needs to hear it.
Chemical compliance fails less often because of chemistry and more often because of documents nobody owned. The science is usually handled by the supplier; the risk sits in the gap between the supplier declaration and what is actually in the store room.
## RSL and MRSL are not the same promise
An RSL limits what may remain in the finished garment. An MRSL limits what may be used in the process at all. A factory can pass an RSL test on the garment while still storing a chemical that a brand audit will reject on sight. Both lists have to be reconciled against the store room inventory, not against the supplier catalogue.
## The store room is the audit
Every drum needs a label, a safety data sheet no older than the version the brand accepts, and a line in the inventory that matches the physical stock. Most non-conformities found in chemical audits are administrative: an expired sheet, an unlabelled decanted container, a chemical received after the approved list was last updated.
## Build one register, not five
Washing, printing, embroidery and finishing each tend to keep their own list. Merge them. A single register with chemical name, CAS number, supplier, approval status, sheet date and current stock removes the most common finding in a single afternoon.
## Make approval a purchase gate
The cheapest control is refusing delivery. If a chemical is not on the approved register with a current sheet, it does not enter the gate. That one rule prevents more findings than any amount of retrospective testing.
