Fibre-to-fibre closed-loop recovery aims to turn end-of-life garments back into raw material for new garments of similar quality, rather than downcycling into lower-value uses such as insulation or wiping cloths. Achieving this in practice requires the recovered fibre to be clean, of known composition and of sufficient length or molecular integrity to be respun or repolymerised into yarn that performs to the original specification. This is a materially harder goal than general recycling because it demands consistent, well-documented input material at a scale that current collection and sorting systems are still developing toward in most regions.
Material passports, meaning a record attached to or associated with a garment that documents its fibre composition, trims, dye class and production batch, are the practical mechanism proposed to make closed-loop recovery feasible at scale, since they let a sorting or recycling facility identify a garment's exact composition without manual testing. Implementing material passports requires cooperation across the supply chain, from fibre supplier through to brand, since the data must be captured at the point of production and remain accessible, whether through a physical tag, QR code or digital record, through the garment's entire life. Brands exploring this should treat closed-loop claims and passport-based traceability as an emerging capability with real technical and cost constraints, not as an already-solved, universally available system.
How it is done

Favour single-fibre or easily separable material combinations and minimise permanently bonded trims that cannot be removed at end of life.

Record fibre composition, dye class, trim materials and batch identity in a structured format at the point the garment is manufactured.
