What really happens at this stage
Dyeing and finishing transform greige or bleached fabric into the finished shade, hand feel, and functional performance specified on the approved lab dip and swatch. Batch dyeing in jet or winch machines, continuous pad-dyeing ranges, and exhaust dyeing for knits each carry different liquor ratios, temperature profiles, and chemical auxiliaries, and the recipe must be scaled from lab-dip grams to bulk kilograms without losing shade accuracy. Finishing follows with processes such as calendering, sanforizing, brushing, or resin treatment that fix width, shrinkage, and surface hand. Every recipe change, whether dye class, temperature ramp, or liquor ratio, has a measurable effect on shade reproducibility, colourfastness, and fabric strength, which is why dye houses run the process against a documented standard operating procedure rather than operator judgement alone.
Colour approval runs through lab dip, strike-off, and bulk dyeing stages, with each shade checked against the approved standard under controlled lighting using a spectrophotometer or light box, since visual assessment alone is unreliable across different observers. Colourfastness to washing, rubbing, and light is tested on representative bulk samples, not only on the lab dip, because bulk dyeing conditions differ from small-scale trials. Finishing parameters such as stenter overfeed, temperature, and chemical add-on percentage are set to hit the target shrinkage and hand feel, and these settings are recorded so repeat orders can be reproduced. Effluent treatment and chemical handling are now a standard part of dye house governance given the volume of water and auxiliary chemicals involved.
How it is done
- 1Approve lab dip against standard
Match lab dip to the approved shade standard under D65 or equivalent standard lighting, recording delta-E where a spectrophotometer is available.
- 2Scale recipe to bulk
Convert lab-dip grams-per-litre recipe to bulk kilogram dosing, adjusting for liquor ratio and machine loading of the bulk dyeing vessel.
- 3Run bulk dyeing cycle
Follow the documented temperature ramp, hold time, and auxiliary dosing sequence, monitoring pH and temperature at each stage of the cycle.
- 4Check bulk shade and levelness
Pull samples at multiple points in the batch and compare against standard for shade match and levelness before proceeding to finishing.
- 5Apply finishing treatment
Set stenter width, overfeed percentage, and curing temperature to hit target shrinkage and hand feel, then verify against the finishing specification.
- 6Test colourfastness and release
Test washing, rubbing, and light fastness on finished bulk fabric samples and release the batch only once results meet the agreed rating.

- Lab dip approval is documented and archived with the standard swatch before bulk dyeing.
- Recipe scaling calculations are checked before loading the bulk dyeing machine.
- In-process shade checks are taken from multiple points in the batch, not one sample only.
- Finishing machine settings are recorded against each approved recipe for repeat-order reference.
- Colourfastness test reports are reviewed before batch release to cutting.

- Approving shade under poor or inconsistent lighting, leading to disputes once fabric reaches the customer.
- Scaling lab-dip recipes to bulk without adjusting for liquor ratio, producing an off-shade batch.

- Rushing the finishing cycle and under-curing resin or heat-set treatments, causing shrinkage after the first wash.
