What really happens at this stage
Fabric relaxation is the controlled resting of fabric rolls or open-width batches before spreading, allowing internal stresses introduced during knitting, dyeing, finishing, and rolling to dissipate so the fabric reaches dimensional stability before it is cut. Knitted fabrics in particular are prone to width and length shrinkage or bowing/skewing if cut immediately after finishing, because the fabric structure continues to relax for hours after it leaves the finishing machine. Relaxation is usually done by laying fabric loosely on a rack or table, or leaving rolls open and unrolled, in a controlled temperature and humidity environment for a defined resting period before spreading begins.
The resting period varies by fabric type and finishing history, with heavier or heavily processed knits generally needing longer relaxation than lightweight, stable wovens, and the factory determines the appropriate duration through trial cutting and shrinkage testing rather than a single fixed rule for all fabrics. Skipping or shortening relaxation is one of the most common causes of post-cut shrinkage complaints, where garments measure correctly at cutting but fail measurement after washing or pressing because the fabric was cut under residual tension. Relaxation records, including start and end time per lot, are typically logged so that cutting is only authorised once the minimum resting period has been met.

Spot-measure width and take a shrinkage sample on sensitive fabrics before releasing the batch to spreading.

Authorise the batch for spreading only once the logged relaxation period meets or exceeds the determined minimum.
