Material researchers evaluate new fibre blends, finishing technologies, recycled content options and performance treatments by reviewing supplier technical data sheets, requesting swatch samples, and commissioning basic lab testing for hand, weight, stretch recovery and colourfastness before any commitment is made to a design brief. This work often runs a full season or more ahead of product design so that viable options are ready when designers need them.
Findings are compiled into a material library or fabric bible, organised by category and performance attribute, with each entry annotated with supplier, minimum order quantity, lead time and indicative cost. Cross-functional review with design, technical and sourcing teams determines which materials are promoted from research into the approved seasonal fabric story, based on a combination of test results, cost feasibility and supplier reliability.
