Inline, endline and AQL final audit.

What really happens at this stage

Quality control in apparel manufacturing runs on three linked checkpoints: inline checks on the sewing floor, endline inspection at the end of each production line, and a final random audit before goods are released to the buyer or their agent. Inline checks catch construction faults early, while the operator or line is still working the same operation, so correction is cheap and fast. Endline inspection looks at the finished garment coming off the line, covering measurements, seams, trims, and overall workmanship against the approved sample and the technical pack. This layered approach exists because catching a stitching defect after fifty pieces have been produced is far cheaper than discovering it after the whole order has been packed.

The final audit typically follows the buyer's agreed AQL plan, where a statistically sized sample is drawn from packed cartons and inspected against defined critical, major and minor defect categories. The result is a pass or fail decision for the shipment, not a full re-inspection of every piece, so the sampling plan and the honesty of carton selection matter enormously. Quality control also depends on a documented defect vocabulary understood the same way by operators, inline checkers, and auditors, otherwise the same fault gets recorded differently by different people. Traceability of who inspected what, and when, allows a factory to trace a recurring fault back to a specific line, machine, or shift.

How it is done

    Set the inspection standard

    Confirm the approved sample, size specification, and the buyer's specified test method or defect classification before production starts, so inline and endline checkers work to one reference.

    Run inline checks

    Station inline checkers to sample roughly every 1 in 10 to 1 in 20 pieces at critical operations, recording defects by operation code on a real-time chart.

    Escalate repeat faults

    When the same defect appears three or more times at one operation within a shift, stop that operation, retrain the operator, and check the machine setting before resuming.

    Conduct endline inspection

    Check 100 percent of garments at the end of the line for appearance and workmanship, and a representative sample for measurements, segregating defective pieces for rework before packing.

    Perform the pre-final audit

    Pull a small internal sample from packed cartons a day or two before shipment to catch issues before the buyer's own auditor arrives.

    Execute the final random audit

    Draw cartons and pieces per the buyer's agreed AQL plan, tally critical, major and minor defects, and issue a pass or fail report with photographic evidence for any fail.

Control points to check and sign off

  • Approved sample and tech pack signed off before bulk cutting begins.
  • Inline defect charts reviewed by the line supervisor at least twice per shift.
  • Carton selection for the final audit done by the auditor, not pre-arranged by the factory.
  • Defect terminology and severity classification agreed in writing with the buyer or QC agency.
  • All audit reports, whether pass or fail, filed against the purchase order number for traceability.

Common pitfalls and their consequences

  • Treating endline inspection as the only checkpoint, so faults accumulate for hundreds of pieces before anyone notices, forcing large-batch rework.
  • Letting checkers self-select 'good' cartons for the final audit, which produces a false pass and risks a customer complaint after shipment.
  • Using inconsistent defect names across inline, endline and audit stages, which hides recurring root causes in the data.
  • Ignoring minor defect trends because they individually pass AQL, allowing a systemic issue to persist across multiple shipments.
  • Failing to retrain or requalify an operator after a repeat fault, so the same defect resurfaces on the next style with the same operation.
