For a repair programme to function at scale, spare parts such as matching zipper pullers, buttons, trims and fabric swatches need to be retained or sourced well after the original production run has ended, which requires deliberate planning at the sourcing stage rather than an afterthought once garments are already in the market. Turnaround time, cost transparency and clear communication about what is and is not repairable are what determine whether customers actually use a repair service rather than discarding the item.

Brands offering repair typically publish guidance on which garment types and defect categories are eligible, since some damage such as extensive fabric degradation or contamination cannot be economically or safely repaired. Repair economics depend on labour cost relative to the value of the garment, so programmes often work best for higher-value items, technical outerwear, or categories where customers have an emotional or functional attachment to the specific piece.
