What really happens at this stage
Denim washing modifies fabric appearance and hand-feel after garments are sewn, using mechanical, chemical, and increasingly water-saving technologies. Ozone treatment fades indigo dye through gas-phase oxidation in a sealed chamber, reducing water and chemical use compared with traditional stone or bleach washes, while e-flow systems apply chemistry as a nanobubble foam carried in a small volume of water rather than a full bath, cutting water consumption substantially for a given wash effect. Laser fading etches localised colour loss patterns, such as whiskers or worn patches, directly onto the garment surface under computer control, replacing much of the manual sandpaper or hand-scraping work previously required and giving highly repeatable placement.
Enzymatic washing uses cellulase enzymes to bio-stonewash and soften denim fabric, loosening surface indigo for a faded look with gentler mechanical action than pumice stone washing, though enzyme activity is sensitive to temperature, pH, and treatment time and must be controlled to avoid over-attacking the fibre. Any wet-processing operation involving bleach, permanganate, or enzyme chemistry requires competent, trained personnel following the chemical supplier's safety data sheet and the factory's chemical management procedure, including correct personal protective equipment, ventilation, and effluent handling; this guidance does not substitute for that documented, supplier-specific chemical handling and safety training, which should be sourced from the chemical and machine suppliers and the factory's health and safety function.
How it is done
- 1Select the wash recipe
Choose ozone, e-flow, laser, enzymatic, or a combination based on the target fade pattern and hand-feel in the approved sample.
- 2Prepare garments
Sort by fabric type, weight, and colour, and check seams and trims for wash compatibility before loading.
- 3Follow supplier safety procedures
Operate any chemical or enzyme process strictly under the supplier's safety data sheet and the factory's trained personnel and PPE requirements.
- 4Run the treatment
Execute the ozone, e-flow, laser, or enzyme cycle at the parameters validated for the fabric and target shade, monitoring machine readouts throughout.
- 5Rinse, neutralise, and dry
Rinse and neutralise chemical residues as required by the process, then dry under controlled temperature to avoid shrinkage or shade shift.
- 6Inspect against the standard
Compare shade, fade pattern, and hand-feel against the approved wash standard sample before releasing the batch to finishing.
