Choosing PLM for a Garment Factory Without Regret
Software does not create discipline; it makes existing discipline scale. Factories that succeed with PLM had a working tech-pack and approval process on paper first. Factories that fail bought a system hoping it would invent one.

Name the three problems you are buying it for
PLM earns its keep on version control, approval traceability and reuse of previous development work. If you cannot state the three specific failures you want removed — for example "bulk ran an old pattern version" — the evaluation will drift into feature comparison and the cheapest demo will win.
- Single source of truth for the tech pack and its versions
- Auditable approval history with who, what and when
- Searchable library of past styles, BOMs and costings
Map the process before you see a demo
Write the current flow from enquiry to bulk handover on one page, with every document and every approval. Vendors will configure their system to whatever you show them; showing them nothing means buying their default process, which was designed for someone else's factory.
Integration is where budgets die
The costly part is rarely the licence. It is connecting PLM to ERP for the bill of materials, to the cutting room for markers, and to quality for the defect catalogue. Ask for the integration scope in writing, with the data owner named on both sides of each interface.
Insist on data export in an open format from day one. A system you cannot leave will eventually be a system you cannot negotiate with.
Roll out on one product family
Take a single product family through a full season inside the system before extending. One family, all stages, real orders. Parallel running on paper for one season is not waste — it is the only honest test of whether the configuration matches the factory.
- Pilot one family end to end, not one department across all families
- Measure development lead time and version errors before and after
- Retire the paper equivalent deliberately, on a stated date
