Energy and Water Quick Wins in Wet Processing
Wet processing carries most of a garment's water, energy and chemical footprint — and most of the cheap savings. These six changes need process discipline far more than capital.

Six changes worth doing first
None of these require a new machine. All of them reduce cost and effluent load at the same time, which is what makes them survivable when budgets tighten.
- Right-size liquor ratios per machine and per fabric instead of using one recipe
- Reuse final rinse water as the first bath of the next cycle where shade allows
- Recover heat from hot effluent to preheat incoming process water
- Repair steam traps and insulate valves and flanges, not just pipe runs
- Cut reprocessing by tightening shade approval — every redye doubles the footprint
- Meter the top five machines separately so consumption has an owner
Measure per kilogram, not per month
Monthly utility bills hide everything. Litres of water and kilowatt-hours per kilogram of production make performance comparable across months, shifts and machines, and they make a reprocessing spike immediately visible.
Reprocessing is the hidden footprint
In many dyehouses, redyeing accounts for a tenth of total water use. Improving first-time-right shade approval is usually the largest single environmental gain available, and it is a quality project, not an engineering one.
