What you actually do
- Cost the enquiry: fabric and trim consumption, CM, freight, and the negotiation position.
- Book fabric and trims and chase them until they are in store on the required date.
- Drive the approval chain — lab dips, fabric, trims, fit and pre-production samples.
- Maintain the time and action calendar and escalate before a date slips, not after.
- Answer the buyer clearly, in writing, with numbers.

Qualification & experience
Apparel management, textile or business qualification. Merchandising is the most common office entry route for garment graduates.
How to get in — the realistic route
- 1. Learn open costing properly — the free costing toolkit exists for exactly this interview.
- 2. Practise building a time and action calendar for a fictional 30,000-piece order.
- 3. Apply as Trainee Merchandiser / Assistant Merchandiser in a factory or a buying house.
