Worked examples
- Basic knit tee, 1.62 m at 6 percent wastage
- The consumption estimator shows the fabric cost, and the assumption note records marker efficiency and end-loss separately — so a later variance of two percent can be attributed rather than argued about.
- 22-minute garment at two efficiencies
- At 50 percent efficiency the CM is materially higher than at 65 percent. The calculator prints both, which makes the efficiency assumption part of the quotation instead of a hidden risk.
- DHU to defect rate conversion
- A line reporting 38 defects across 420 audited garments converts to a DHU figure comparable with other lines, even though the audit sample sizes differ.

Write the assumption next to the number
Every calculator has an assumptions field. A consumption figure without its marker efficiency and wastage allowance is not a number anyone can check.
Calibrate against actuals
Feed last season's real consumption and efficiency back into the inputs. Calculators are only as good as the factory data behind them.
Fix the minute cost once a year
Derive cost per standard minute from annual conversion cost and productive minutes available, then hold it constant across styles. Re-deriving it per order is how difficult styles end up subsidised by easy ones.

- The estimators cover plain knit and woven basics; for stripes, checks and placed prints you add a matching allowance, and the sheet prompts for it.

- The costing sheet builds materials, CM, commercial cost and margin separately, which is the structure an open FOB quotation needs.
