How to read a fabric test report without guessing

A test report is a production decision document, not paperwork. The point is to separate results that need a fabric replacement from results that only need a process adjustment.

How it works
1.Start with mass and construction
GSM, ends/picks or courses/wales and yarn count confirm you received the fabric you approved. A GSM deviation over 5% changes consumption, drape and cost.
2.Read dimensional stability next
Shrinkage in length and width drives pattern compensation. Compensate in the pattern only when the result is repeatable across lots; otherwise fix the finishing.
3.Then colour fastness
Wash, rub (dry/wet), perspiration and light fastness. Wet rub below grade 3 on dark shades predicts customer complaints and staining in packing.
4.Finally durability
Pilling, bursting or tensile strength and seam slippage tell you whether the garment survives real wear. These are usually fabric-level failures that cannot be corrected in sewing.
Quick reference
- GSM tolerance
- ±5% of approved value
- Wash fastness target
- Grade 4 or better
- Wet rub target
- Grade 3–4 minimum on darks
- Pilling target
- Grade 3–4 after 5,000 rubs
Checks you can run this week
- Match every report to the specific dye lot and roll numbers received.
- Reject the lot when shrinkage varies more than 1% between rolls.
- Keep a retained swatch with the report for claim traceability.

Where this fits in sourcing
This topic is used at the following stages of the free NOSK.space sourcing guide, which links each decision to the questions to ask and the real organisations to approach.
- Stage 1: Fabric and fibre selection
Fix the construction and test requirements before you ask for a price.
Common questions
- Which failure can be fixed in the factory?
- Repeatable shrinkage and mild skew can be absorbed by pattern and spreading changes. Fastness and strength failures cannot — replace the fabric.
- Do I need to pay for these templates?
- No. Everything on NOSK.life, including the checklists behind these explainers, is free of charge.
